Halal is an Arabic term which means permitted, allowed & lawful and for a product to be Halal it should be free from all traces of Haram (prohibited substances) as per religious text of Quran & Sunnah. If something is declared “Haram” it remains prohibited regardless of the good intention or honorable purpose. The concept of Halal products is based on Islamic injunctions as envisaged in the following verse: “O Mankind, Eat of that which is Halal and Tayyab on Earth,” (Quran 2:168). It is, therefore, important to develop and standardize Shariah guidelines, principles, rules and regulations for the development of Halal trade and businesses at the local & global level.
